Well I didn't know the answer to this question. I haven't had the opportunity to speak with somebody following me to have them tell me when the brake lights were on or off.
I noticed in the latest update that in the Settings->Lights the daytime running lights on the model of the car will correctly show if the daytime running lights are on or off. Well I spun the model of the car around (swipe left or right on it) and pressed the brakes. The lights on the model light up to indicate whether the brake lights are on or off.
So I tried this while driving and when I lift my foot off the accelerator the brake lights on the model light up. I played around with this feature and found that a small amount of regeneration doesn't cause the brake lights to light up but as the regeneration increases the brake lights light up.
Maybe this has always shown up but this is the first time I noticed it.
This reduces my concern over vehicles behind me crashing into me when I use strong regeneration. Now it appears that the brake lights light up due to either braking or regeneration. Nice.
